I have liked making things for longer than I can remember. My nursery school report notes "Wendy is happy by herself in the art center" but by the middle of the year "she has started joining other children in collaborative play."
In the half century since my nursery school days, I have created and made all manner of things--drawings and 3D creations only a parent could love, doll house light fixtures out of egg shells, scratch art, all the spin art and spirograph images imaginable, macrame animals, drawing, prints of many kinds, collage and paper scrolls, clothes, a handful of oddly shaped sweaters, two pretty amazing children (colloration), approximately 2 zillion lesson plans, 1 zillion dinners or other meals, figurative clay sculpture, found object sculptures, weavings with dried day-lilly stalks, blackout poems, paper mache milkweedpods, and a several as yet unrealized grand plans for installations of unusual size.

Although I look over my creations and see a range of media, I also see though lines. I notice all the ways in which I have considered words--as background, as a way of revealing or hiding ideas, words and phrases that I find and keep because they capture just the idea I didn't know I was trying to express. I see that gender pops up over and over. I see that I have tried to reinterpret traditional ways of working or patterning with nontraditional material, several times. While some of these ideas and wonderings are serious business, I appreciate whimsy and humor in the final product--something that elicits a hint of a smile. And, finally, regardless of time or place, always collecting the ephemera around me and putting it in conversation with some other 'treasure'--any of which may be painted or covered to obscure their original self just enough to let me think anew about their potential.
